Ashes on the Water

They watched aghast, now there was no chance they could return.
They stood along the shoreline speechless, watching their ships burn.
Commitment at any cost was their captain’s order and expectation.
They were here to stay, for they had come to conquer as a nation.
The ships burned to wrecks, as charred wood now washed to shore.
The sailors knew their only home was this land they would explore.

For years the story has been told of Cortez and his daring stand.
His name revered by countrymen, as a conqueror of foreign land.
But comparisons have been made to man’s holy walk with God.
For we are conquerors of heart, as Cortez was a conqueror of sod.
We have been called to the battle against that which God calls sin.
But how many times we seek to return to those places we have been.

We look not at the battlefield before us, but at our ships there secure,
Riding on the waves waiting for us, if we decide we cannot endure.
Our ships are our security, in case we fail at this new life we’ve tried.
Our cowardice is obvious, and our compromise cannot be denied.
We have become sailors with no destiny and soldiers with no will,
For our ships will take us home if this journey we are on goes ill.

But God does not want a Christian who is not committed to the task.
He is looking for the sailor who will salute, and do as He might ask.
Nor does He need the coward whose ships lie at anchor on the shore.
No dear Christian, God Almighty is looking for something more!
He wants those who will not go back on the stand they take for Him.
He’s looking for a Christian whose holiness is more than just a whim.

God wants that Christian who will not look back but will give Him all.
God does not need the soldier who is not committed to the call.
The challenge is to the soldier who calls himself by Christ’s own name.
Will you be diligent to your calling, or sail back home to shame?
The ships lie safely at their anchors and they wait quietly now for you.
The question is to you gallant soldier, what are you going to do?

Have you come to conquer? Have you come to take a final stand?
If you have, then dear Christian, I am here to take you by the hand.
Let’s go together in our little boat; that would never see us through.
Let’s board our ships and burn them as we know that we should do.
For the Captain of the fleet is looking for sailors who choose to stay –
Sailors who will reduce their ships to ashes so they cannot sail away.

Your ships are sitting in the harbor. It would be easy to sail for home.
The nights are cold and dark and it probably feels like you are alone.
But the crown is to the conqueror not the quitter. Which will you be?
Go burn your ships courageous sailor. Plant your flag beside the sea.
If you call yourself a Christian, today is the day to obey your Father.
Go torch the ships at anchor and reduce them to ashes on the water.
