The Calling
His dad was a dirt poor farmer, lived life on the tractor.
He never went to college for finances were a factor.
He struggled for every penny that he ever made in life.
But God blessed him with four children and a loving wife.
With a lack of education, his circumstances seemed grim.
But he knew that God had plans and He could use him.
He raised his children in the admonition of the Lord.
He knew doing any less was a risk he could not afford.
Many nights he’d kneel by the bed of his children dear,
Or run to their bed side when they cried out from fear.
Each of his children had accepted Jesus into their heart.
Though poor as could be, he knew he had done his part.
His eldest son grew up and wanted to learn to preach.
But without college many told him it was out of reach.
Each day this young man studied his Bible carefully,
And wore out its thin pages as he read it prayerfully.
But each time he’d ask to preach no one saw potential.
For they always asked if they could see his credentials.
He’d hang his head and walk away rejected yet again.
No one cared what he knew or where he had been.
All they wanted was that fancy piece of paper on the wall.
They cared not that to the study of Scripture he’d given all.
Oh no, this was not a matter of the truth within his heart.
This was a matter of status, for God only used the smart.
So many times this man was turned away from his calling.
The arrogant apathy of his detractors was quite appalling.
No one believed this man was eligible or capable to teach.
If he could not do that, than clearly he could not preach.
So with heavy heart the young man gave up in sad defeat.
He relinquished his dream, his life purpose incomplete.
Then one day over a cup of coffee he witnessed to a man.
As he shared the gospel, his protégé began to understand.
That day this failed preacher led a sinner to repentance.
Patiently he told the story with plain and simple sentence.
There were no profound statements, just the Holy Word.
That day over coffee, great and mighty things occurred.
A man who’d run from God, now said the sinner’s prayer.
This failed preacher led him to Christ while sitting there.
He’d never had a flock, he’d never stood behind a pulpit.
Rejection for a lack of education had been the culprit.
Yet, here he was, doing what no one else had been able.
Leading a sinner to repentance from across a café’ table.
That sinner that prayed that day? Oh, I’m so glad you ask.
God did a miracle that day when He took his heart to task.
That man went to Bible college and a preacher he became.
I tell you this with joy, but I also tell it to the church’s shame.
For the man they rejected, reached the unreachable soul,
Who went on to preach revival that made sinners whole.
Great revival swept the land as this man shared God’s Word.
People bowed in repentance when his preaching they heard.
And what about that man who led the preacher to the Lord?
No one knows what became of him, but great is his reward.
For God uses some to sow, some to water and some to reap.
For He is the Shepherd and He chooses how to use His sheep.
When others rejected this man on the basis of education,
God used his failure to bring the next preacher to salvation.
And all those who said he was not capable to lead a church
What became of those who left this man’s dream in the lurch?
They just continued doing their Christian duty, filling the pews.
And God turned His back, for their hypocrisy He couldn’t use.
Is it not a sad travesty that the church is so demanding?
And I ask, Why are not more men in our pulpits standing?
What a shame that the Church only listens to the learned.
What shame that those God has chosen they have spurned!
Yes, learning is a good thing, but a calling – that’s a God thing.
And with this concept, the Church should not be wrestling.
A legacy of poverty should never become a legacy of shame.
For God used the widow’s little coin to the glory of His name.
One Godly man raised a family and a son who wished to preach.
But God’s people all decided that his calling they’d impeach.
But God was watching how His humble servant walked,
And used him for His glory, for God would not be mocked.
